Galen W. Kolva

May 9, 1926 — January 14, 2017

Galen W. Kolva, 90, of The Bridges at Bent Creek and formerly of Lewisberry, passed away on Saturday, January 14, 2017 in Carolyn’s House, a service of Hospice of Central PA, Susquehanna Twp.

Galen served in the U. S. Army Air Force and was honorably discharged on July 5, 1949 as a Sergeant. He retired from his professional career on February 28, 1986 as Production Manager for PP&L, Harrisburg after almost 39 years of service. He was an avid outdoorsman who had a deep appreciation for nature. He spent eight years building a cabin in Union County that he treasured the rest of his life. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, cutting firewood, jigsaw puzzles and playing Bingo when he moved to the Bridges. He will be sorely missed by his firewood customers and by all the people whose lives he touched, which are so many. More than anything, he loved his family, and in their later years, took great pride in caring for his wife of more than 68 years.

Galen was born in Halifax to the late Wesley and Anne (Fettrow) Kolva. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son Ronald E. Kolva; a brother Paul Kolva; and 6 sisters, Elma Fleisher, Verna Miller, Eva Gearhart, Vesta Romberger, Ione Scruggs and Emma Wolfe.

He is survived by his wife Arlene G. (Matter) Kolva; his children, Nancy A. Opolonik and husband John J. of Newburg, PA, Jeffrey A. Kolva and wife Bernadette M. of Lewisberry and Lisa J. Herb and husband Thomas R. of Lewisberry; three brothers, Karl, William and James Kolva; four grandchildren, Tanya M. Ziegler, Briana M. Benkoski, Andrew M. Kolva and Bryson T. Herb; and ten great grandchildren.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Rolling Green Cemetery, Lower Allen Twp.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions in Galen’s memory to either Hospice of Central PA, 1320 Linglestown Road Harrisburg, PA 17110 or to the American Diabetes Association, 1701 N. Beauregard St. Alexandria, VA 22311-1733.
