Betty C. Blough

June 14, 1923 — July 20, 2018

Betty C. Blough, 95, died peacefully on Friday, July 20, 2018 at her Bethany Village residence, Mechanicsburg, PA. She was formerly of Johnstown, PA and Calabash, NC. Betty was born June 14, 1923 in Clearfield to the late Robert and Esther Ellen (Demi) Cochrane.

A graduate of Juniata College, she edited the college newspaper and played violin in the orchestra. She was married to E. Percy Blough, Jr. for 64 years until his death in 2010. After a career as a language arts teacher for Richland Twp. Schools in Johnstown, she and Percy retired to Calabash, NC. They enjoyed many happy years of boating, golfing, and mild winters while living there. She was skilled at a variety of artistic endeavors including knitting, sewing, painting, creating dollhouses and their furnishings, and quilting. It was during her years in Calabash that she began woodcarving, an art at which she became quite proficient. She later became a member of West Shore Wood Carvers Club. Over the years, she gifted her family and friends with many of her handcrafted treasures.

Betty was a former member of Mechanicsburg Presbyterian Church and Calabash Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder and newsletter editor. She was awarded an honorary lifetime membership to Presbyterian Women (USA) for her service contributions to the church. After moving to Bethany Village, she became an active community volunteer in various positions and developed many meaningful friendships and mentorships among residents and staff.

Betty was deeply devoted to her family. She is survived by a son, A. Randolph Blough (Debra) of Downingtown; three daughters: Gerry B. Sechrist (Joel) of Lemoyne, Patricia B. Straub (James) of Southport, NC and Nancy B. Peterson of Chapel Hill, NC; seven grandchildren: Drew, Katie, Michael, Kelly, Ben, Caroline, and Kimberly; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 PM Sunday, July 29th at Bethany Village Rife Center, 325 Wesley Dr., Mechanicsburg, PA. Interment will be at North Myrtle Beach Memorial Gardens, Little River, SC.
