Brig. Gen. Robert M. Sheaffer

December 22, 1919 — April 4, 2016

Brig. Gen. Robert M. Sheaffer, (USAR) Ret., 96, of Oberlin, passed away on Monday, April 4, 2016 in Messiah Village, Upper Allen Twp.

He was a WWII Army veteran serving overseas and was retired from the US Army Reserves where he served as Commanding Officer, the PA National Guard, and the former New Cumberland Army Depot where he served as Senior Army Logistician. He was a graduate of Swatara Township High School, Central Penn Business College and Lebanon Valley College, Annville. He was a member of both Neidig Memorial United Methodist Church, Oberlin and Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Harrisburg. Additionally, he was a member of Harrisburg Lodge 629, F&AM; Harrisburg Consistory, AASR; Zembo Shrine, AAONMS, Harrisburg; Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Forest 43, Harrisburg; the Reserve Officers Association; and the Association of the U.S. Army.

General Sheaffer was born in Oberlin to the late George E. and Susan Rebecca (Deimler) Sheaffer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two wives, Alma (Taylor) Sheaffer and Ernestine (Eshenaur) Sheaffer. In addition to his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by all four of his siblings: George Sheaffer, Cordella S. Felder, Luther J. Sheaffer, Virginia S. Smeltzer and their spouses.

He is survived by his children, Sherry R. Breton and husband Thomas J. of West Chester and Robert G. Sheaffer and wife Dawn M. of Enola; five grandchildren, Nathan T. Breton, Alisha M. Jehu, Robyn M. Sheaffer, Robert T. Sheaffer and Connie M. Sheaffer; and four great grandchildren, Haley Marie Jehu, Haley Mae Page, Mason L. Page and Clay R. Jehu.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Friday, April 8, 2016 in Neidig Memorial United Methodist Church, 1251 Highland St. Steelton, PA. Viewing will be one hour prior to services in the church. Burial with military honors will be in Churchville Cemetery, Oberlin.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions to either Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 15 S. Fourth St. Harrisburg, PA 17101 or to Neidig Memorial United Methodist Church, 1251 Highland St. Steelton, PA 17113.
