Carter R. Johnson

November 13, 1931 - August 5, 2014

Carter had a loud and infectious laugh. She was the life of any gathering.
She opened her home to all friends of her three daughters as well as all neighborhood
children. No one went hungry.
Carter was born in Danville, Virginia and lived in many areas of the United States with
much of that time in Fresno, California.
She was a dancer, poet, artist and comedienne. A lover of music of many genre. She
understood the healing powers of music and the joy. She loved to put records on the
stereo and dance while she cleaned house.
Carter was an educator; innately and professionally.
For eleven years she taught remedial reading in an area of Fresno that was poverty
stricken. She established a program to collect clothing and coats for the children.
She taught for thirteen years at Fresno County Juvenile Hall. The inmates in her
classroom received her instruction in the core curriculum as well as many things in this
world that were unknown to these boys and girls. She would play CD’s and Videos of
concerts of classical music, ballet, musicals, and plays. Once she arranged a field trip for
some of the girls to witness a live performance by the Fresno Ballet.
In Kernville, California she taught at Camp Owen for Delinquent Boys.
She taught on the Navajo Reservation in Fort Defiance, Arizona.
She taught Sunday School for every church of which she was a member.
At Saint James’ Cathedral in Fresno she was a founding member of Saint James’ Day
School.
She had a firm hand yet a gentle touch.
Carter possessed an incredibly strong faith. This faith carried her through the trials and
tribulations of her life. She had the ability to pass on this faith to all around her. So
many people commented about the joy they felt while in her presence. And so many,
were helped so much, by Carter.
