Diane H. Brougher

September 21, 1938 — April 10, 2016

Diane H. Brougher, 77, of York Haven, died from cancer on April 10, 2016.
Diane was born on September 21, 1938. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Ronald L. Brougher. Surviving her are her son Farron Brougher and his wife Tracey Tomashpol, of Anaheim, CA; also Beth Brougher and her spouse Terri McEntee, of New Cumberland.

Diane met her future husband she was 10 and he was 12. After they married in 1956, she wanted nothing more than to be a housewife and raise children. She took care of her children with loving devotion, not taking full-time employment until they were 10 and 12. She worked in a variety of secretarial and administrative positions, until she began her long tenure with Berg Electronics, where she retired as a patent secretary in 2001.

During her retirement, Diane owned a small business, Victoria Rose, where she made and sold Victorian-themed decorative accessories. She also worked with her husband in their home business, Replitques Colonial Reproductions. Diane learned the art of applying distressed paint finishes to the wood accessory pieces that Ronald built.

Before they were married, Diane was Ronald’s assistant in his amateur magic act. They became accomplished ballroom dancers and were instructors at the Hotel Hershey.

During family camping trips in the 1960’s, Diane mastered the challenges of cooking full meals on a two burner Coleman gas stove and wood fire, sometimes in the rain, wind, or both. Her favorite camping spot was in a secluded part of Pine Grove State Park. She and her husband did not think well of trailer campers, believing that they might just as well have stayed at home.

Wherever she went Diane’s warm and outgoing personality soon put people at ease. This may have been inherited from her father, Clark J. Hollister, who was a dentist who people actually liked. As a regular at the Friday Haar’s Auction, she found more pleasure in meeting her friends than she did in bidding for bargains. When she was regularly working out at the West Shore YMCA, she soon found another circle of friends.

Not all of Diane’s friends were people. She took stray cats into her home and saved their lives. She volunteered at Nobody’s Cats, and recently she visited the York ASCPA to spend time socializing and playing with kittens.

Diane learned from her father and she taught her children by her example that our lives and the world are not made better by pessimism and self-pity. She suffered during her life but never indulged in resignation.
