Evan M. Semoff, Jr.

October 30, 1942 — December 6, 2021

Evan M. Semoff, Jr., 79, of Camp Hill, and formerly of New Cumberland, passed away on Monday, December 6, 2021 at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Derry Twp. He was the son of the late Evan M. and Edith M. (King) Semoff, born on October 30, 1942 in York.

For nearly 65 years, you could find Evan behind a barber chair at his family’s 94-year-old business, Semoff’s Barber Shop, New Cumberland. He joined his father at the shop while still in high school, and took over as owner/operator after his father passed in the mid-1960s. A 1960 graduate of Cedar Cliff High School, Camp Hill, Evan would go on to serve his country in the U.S. Army; his time was spent stationed in the demilitarized zone during the Korean War. After returning home, he focused his sights on raising a family, supporting the community, and (of course) giving great haircuts. He was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church, New Cumberland, and his faith would also lead him to become a Mason, belonging to Eureka West Shore Lodge F&AM, Mechanicsburg. He was also active with the Harrisburg Consistory and the Zembo Shrine. Throughout the years, Evan’s memberships included the Royal Order of Jesters, Chartier Club of New Cumberland, the Reciprocity Club of Harrisburg, and the PA State Barber’s Board; he was past-president of the Cumberland County Shrine Club, New Cumberland Lions Club and CCHS Football Boosters. He was an avid (and skilled) golfer, belonging to the West Shore Country Club, Riverview Golf Club or the Country Club of Harrisburg at one time or another, and he was a regular in ABC North bowling leagues. He found true happiness when he met and married the love of his life, Marian, and his boys were his pride and joy from day one. Evan knew everyone, and everyone knew him. He enjoyed holding court at the shop, and he tried his best to know each and every one of his customers; he also had a knack for making you feel important, like a small-town celebrity, each and every time you walked through the barbershop door. You could almost sense him swelling with pride as he spent his final years cutting hair alongside his son, Chris, and grandson, Zak. His legacy will continue with every swipe of the buzzer and snip of the scissors, but he will truly live on in the hearts of all those he touched (and trimmed) at 205 3rd Street, New Cumberland.

Surviving Evan is his best friend and loving wife of 23 years, Marian (Hempt) Semoff; beloved sons, Evan M. Semoff III (wife, Kristine) of York Haven, and Christopher V. Semoff (wife, Lora) of New Cumberland; and his grandchildren, Zakery, Jessica and Allison, whom he adored. He also leaves behind a sister.

Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. A celebration of life will be held at a future date yet to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution in Evan’s name to his church: Trinity United Methodist Church, 415 Bridge Street, New Cumberland, PA 17070 or at www.trinityumnc.org.

The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to all doctors and nurses within the Cardiovascular and LVAD units at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Their unparalleled care and compassion kept Evan healthy, in good spirits, and on this earth for much more time than expected.
