Gardner R. "G.R." Whitney

October 12, 1920 — April 27, 2015

Gardner R. “G.R.” Whitney, 94, of New Cumberland, died April 27th, 2015, at Holy Spirit Hospital, East Pennsboro Twp.
He retired as the co-owner/operator of Mountainside Ski and Sports, Mechanicsburg; a U.S. Air Force WWII Veteran having served thirty seven months in the United States Air Force Pacific Air Forces as a flight engineer on Boeing B-17 Bombers and B-24 Liberator Bombers. G.R. was an Elder and a member of Camp Hill Presbyterian Church; a member of V.F.W. Post 7415, New Cumberland; a former member of the National Ski Patrol and Alumni Ski Patrol member and was the former Ski Patrol Director at Ski Roundtop, Lewisberry. He was an active volunteer with the Special Olympics, Area M as an Alpine Ski Coach.
Born on October 12th, 1920, in Somerville, MA, he was the son of the late Ernest E. and Mildred (Gardner) Whitney. He was also preceded in death by a son, Richard E. Whitney.
Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Wanda Lee (Smith) Whitney; his son and his wife, David E. and Patricia L. Whitney of Mechanicsburg; three grandchildren, Jonathan D. Whitney, Michelle W. Olsen and Amelia C. Whitney; four great grandchildren, Bauer, Lily, Bryce and Ember.
Memorial services will be held at 2 PM on Friday in Camp Hill Presbyterian Church, Camp Hill, with the Rev. David A. Roquemore officiating. Inurnment with full military honors will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, East Hanover Twp.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to services in the church.
