***PUBLIC SERVICES CANCELED***

Herman A. Hanemann, 91, a native of New Cumberland, passed away on Monday, March 9, 2020 at UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg Hospital. Son of the late Herman Andrew and Matilda (Landis) Hanemann, he was born on February 17, 1929 in Harrisburg.

Herm was active in sports and scouting throughout his youth. He attended New Cumberland High School and Cornell University, earning Bachelor and Master’s Degrees in Electrical Engineering. During college, he was a member of the rowing team, a Phi Kappa Psi fraternity brother and active in Amateur Radio. Upon graduation, he joined the U.S. Army, and attended the Signal Corps Officers Radar Class at Fort Monmouth, NJ. His security assignments included being stationed in Berlin, Germany, where he was assigned to electronic espionage during the Cold War.

In the private sector, he joined Bendix Corporation, where he designed radar proximity fuzes for guided missiles. He went on to join the engineering group, Benatec Associates in Camp Hill and later moved to the Electrical Consulting field, where he was involved in the design of commercial and industrial buildings, including schools, colleges, churches, nursing homes and hospitals, potable and wastewater treatment plants, and roadway lighting projects.

Outside of work, he was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, New Cumberland. He also belonged to the Fairview Township Authority, and participated in boy scouts for many years with Troop 198 of Etters, PA. He enjoyed taking German and Geology classes at Dickinson College well into his 80s and at one time was probably their oldest student.

Herm could often be found working in his wood and metal shop, taking things apart and figuring out how they operated. He also enjoyed going out to eat with family and friends, especially at his favorite restaurant – Theo’s.

Surviving are his children and their spouses, Thomas A. Hanemann (Kim) of Bridgewater Township, NJ and Karen E. Melvin (Larry) of York Haven; and grandchildren, Lauren Conley (Kyle), Rachael Melvin (fiancé, Haydon White), Joshua Hanemann, Benjamin Hanemann, and Elizabeth Hanemann. He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Elizabeth A. (Bishop) Hanemann.

Due to the Coronavirus situation, public services have been canceled, and services will now be private and held at the convenience of the family. Please leave a comment on our tribute wall to express condolences to the family, or to share memories about Herm.
