John David Hoover

John David Hoover, 95, of Etters, died Sunday, May 02, 2021, at Masonic Village, Elizabethtown.

John was the last of seven brothers raised in rural PA by his mother, a single parent during the Great Depression. He was a true member of the Greatest Generation. He went to war with his brothers who all served in action and who all returned to have large families of their own. The war interrupted his education, but he none the less, went on to become a true self-made success. Starting as a milkman, he eventually became a Nationwide Agent and retired as the head of Agency Operations in the Northeast. He loved interacting with people. He thirsted to know their life stories and they responded to him in a unique way. He recruited agents who were secretaries, bartenders, ministers, clerks and farmers who he inspired to succeed. He loved and inspired his family and passed on his values to his children and grandchildren. His life story was legendary in that and many other ways.

After a 44 year career at Nationwide Insurance, he retired as the Agency Manager for the Dauphin District; a WWII Navy veteran and Purple Heart recipient; a member of Baughman Memorial United Methodist Church, New Cumberland; Robert Burns Masonic Lodge No. 464, F.& A.M., Harrisburg; and Shriner; Harrisburg Consistory; Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Harrisburg Forest #43, and played in the Oriental Band; Lower Paxton Business and Professional Assn. a charter member and sat on the board of the Friendship Center; the Pennsylvania Blue Bird Assn.; American Legion Post 974, Fairview Twp.

Born on November 11, 1925 in Tyrone, he was the son of the late William and Grace (Peary) Hoover and was also preceded in death by brothers, James, Willard, Ernest, Clarence, Donald, and Charles.

He was the widower of Irene Jenette (Woomer) Hoover, the mother of his surviving sons and a daughter, Terrin E. Hoover (Marty) of Bloomsburg, Tom C. Hoover of Etters, Tim L. Hoover (Peg) of Bluffton, SC, Joyce E. Cronin (Michael) of Milton, DE, and Ted A. Hoover (Debbie) of Williamsburg, VA; eight grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10 AM on Saturday in Baughman Memorial United Methodist Church, 228 Bridge Street, New Cumberland, with the Rev. Dr. Edwin "Win" Green officiating. Burial will be in Tri-County Memorial Gardens, Newberry Twp. immediately following the church services.

Visitation will be held 5 – 7 PM Friday in Parthemore Funeral Home and Cremation Services, New Cumberland.
