Marjorie P. Walsh

August 16, 1919 — May 1, 2020

Marjorie Patricia Walsh, 100, of Mechanicsburg, passed away on Friday, May 1, 2020, surrounded by those closest to her. She was born in New York City on August 16, 1919. Little did anyone know on that warm summer day what would lie in store for the next 100 years. A few weeks later, Marjorie would be lovingly chosen and adopted by Patrick and Margaret (Kearney) Walsh of Scranton Pennsylvania. They came to the New York Foundling Home looking for a red-haired Irish boy, but when they saw Marjorie, they fell in love with her, and knew she was to be their daughter. From that moment on, she was Marjorie Walsh.

Throughout her lifetime, her passion for loving and serving God would lead her to become a nun. She entered Maryknoll, where she studied to be a teacher, earning her bachelor’s, and later a master’s degree. She started her teaching career in the jungle of Nicaragua, where her first class consisted of 90 kindergartners, by herself! Eventually she settled into teaching elementary grades, along with some high school classes. She returned to PA in 1953 to care for her parents, whose health was failing. She continued to teach, first in PA, then in Maryland, at Potomac Elementary School, where she remained until retiring in 1990. She had been a teacher for 46 years.

Soon after retiring, she moved to the Harrisburg area, where she lived until May 1, 2020, when she graduated to her heavenly home. Marge loved to cook, garden, and share time with family and friends. She was a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mechanicsburg. She is survived by countless friends, many of whom she considered family. All who were blessed to know her will treasure her friendship, zest for life, and kind heart.

Due to circumstances surrounding the pandemic, a public memorial service will be held at Bethany Village at a future date once restrictions are lifted. Please refer to this page for updated information. If you would like to express your interest in attending her future service, you can email the family and receive an update when something has been scheduled. The family’s email is as follows: marjoriewalshservices@gmail.com.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Marjorie’s name to her church: St. Joseph Catholic Church, 410 East Simpson St., Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.
