Michael James Hughes, Jr.

March 31, 1934 — August 17, 2022

Michael James Hughes, Jr., known to us as Jim, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, August 17, 2022. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Elaine (Barto) Hughes, who was by his side.

Jim was born on March 31, 1934, in Los Angeles, CA, and shortly after his birth moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. He was preceded in death by his parents, Retta Mae (Olsen) Hughes and Michael James Hughes, Sr., as well as a sister, Janice Hughes Vohs, who passed in October of 1999. He is survived by his daughters, Catherine Janice Hughes and Elizabeth Simonetti, both of Piedmont, CA; and his two grandchildren, Jane and Peter Simonetti.

He graduated from Oakland Tech and then from the University of California at Berkeley in 1956. He played rugby at Cal for four years, two of which the team won the World Cup. After four years in the U.S. Air Force as a multi-engine pilot, Jim joined The George H. Eberhard Company in San Francisco where he was General Sales Manager and then later President. Jim sold the company in 1976 and moved to Central Pennsylvania.

Jim was Sales Manager for Pestolite Corporation in Lancaster and later for Stackpole Books in Harrisburg. He held a real estate license in Pennsylvania and was active in the Lancaster and Harrisburg areas, and he would manage real estate for Casim Inc. Jim lived in Colonial Woods where he was instrumental in the building of forty-five homes. Jim was Property Manager at the Uptown Plaza Mall from 1987 until his retirement in 2000. He and his wife would attend Fishing Creek Salem United Methodist Church, Etters, during their time in Central Pennsylvania.

He had great plans to write a book someday! The title of that book would have been “Don’t Tell Me There’s No Higher Power.” For sure, that would be a best seller.
