Richard E. Lyter

April 10, 1935 — September 18, 2020

Richard Earl Lyter, 85, of New Cumberland, passed away on Friday, September 18, 2020, at UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg Hospital. Son of the late Russell E. and Ida S. (Beinhauer) Lyter, he was born on 4/10/1935 in Camp Hill.

Richard was a 1954 graduate of Camp Hill High School, where he had quite the athletic career. He played offensive line and defensive end for the football team; they went on to win the Class-B Championship in the Lower Susquehanna conference his senior year. He was co-captain of the track team all three years, and his mile relay team placed fifth in States his senior year. He entered the United States Navy after high school, serving his country during the Korean War. He spent a majority of his four years on the USS Iowa BB61, and ended his service-time on the USS Salem. Entering the workforce, he began his career with the Patriot News, Harrisburg, where he would end up retiring after 40 years of employment. He was especially patriotic and was very proud of his military service. His family loved his stories and his warm heart; and he loved them right back, doting on his grandchildren and cherishing time spent with those closest to him. In his free time, Richard enjoyed going to Penn National to watch the horse racing, playing poker and all kinds of sports.

Surviving Richard is his wife of 62 years, Jean Lois (Vanalman) Lyter; a son, Richard Anthony Lyter of Woodstock, MD; a daughter, Lois Jean Lyter-Baltzey (husband, Robert) of Mechanicsburg; five grandchildren, Shina, Tara, Richard, Jeremy and Robbie; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lisa Ann Lyter; and a sister and two brothers.
