Stewart E. Gross, Iii

Stewart E. Gross III had an immense passion for anything music. This passion steered him from his original goal of attending rodeo clown school. He was a self-taught drummer and guitarist, lyricist and singer who shared his talents and love for performing by hosting open mic nights, acoustic gigs and playing with his many bands including “49 Eggs”, “The Hair Piece”, “Donkey Punch”, “Stewpidazzle”, “Free Food Buffet”, “The Dirty Place”, “Off the Wagon” and “Nevermind-Nirvana Tribute Band”. When not playing or singing, Stew shared his talents for sound and lighting through his company “Sandman Sound & Lighting”.

Stew spent time working at CPARC in varying capacities running a transitional training program, in residential services and also with supported employment for individuals with developmental disabilities. Stew also worked with Goodwill Industries running their contracted shredding services.

In addition to his musical passions, Stew was a huge fan of movies. So much so, it was nearly impossible to have a conversation with him that didn’t involve a reference to some obscure, cinematic performance that he had memorized. Stew freely shared his opinions with others without reservation and was unapologetic in his beliefs. Despite his tough exterior, Stew always had empathy for those that needed it most. His unbridled sense of humor made Stew the center of every party or gathering. Stew did not need a stage to grab the spotlight.

Stew was a lifetime fan of the LA Lakers, Pittsburgh Pirates and Penguins, Washington Redskins and Notre Dame football. He was in love with his “baby”, a black Audi S4 as well as his canine companion, Toby (aka Mr. Bobins).

Stew had countless friends. One to whom he opened his heart, Jess Vaughn (Gross) along with her son Luke. Jess gave Stew the greatest gift of all, their son Jake Gross, whom he loved more than life.

Born December 27, 1974, to Mary Jane Gross and Stewart E. Gross Jr. (Teri Boyd). He had three sisters, Stephanie Gross Freedman (Daniel), Vonnie Sheaffer-Trevenen (Patrick) and Barbara J. Beare (Jeff) as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Sadly, on December 5, Stew passed away. We like to think he is now playing with his musical heroes Neil Peart and Eddie Van Halen who also passed this year.

Due to Covid-19 capacity limits, services will be held at a later date. It is not proper to celebrate Stew’s life if his large group of friends and family cannot be together. As soon as possible, we will announce plans for a huge celebration, or better yet, a “Stew-e-bration”, that will honor Stew properly.

In the meantime, spend time with friends and the people you love. As we all learned, life is too short. When it is safe to do so, venture out and do something fun. Go to a sporting event, go camping, go to a concert, or support local restaurants and live music venues, but most of all, rock out like Stew would want you to.
