William O. "Bill" Weigle

February 8, 1947 — May 5, 2020

Bill Weigle, 73, of Wormleysburg, PA, transitioned to that “Big River in the Sky” on May 5th, at home, surrounded by family, and while overlooking his beloved Susquehanna River. He was born on February 8, 1947, at Harrisburg Hospital. He spent his entire life living along, on, and in the Susquehanna River, while residing in Wormleysburg.

Bill retired as an Assistant Construction Manager from PennDOT in 2007. He was also a former teacher at Cedar Cliff High School and a Peace Corps Volunteer in Liberia, West Africa. As a young man, he worked for many years at the former Harrisburg Seaplane Base.

Bill was a “River Rat,” through and through. At any given time, you could likely find him at, or on, the river. He truly enjoyed the natural beauty of “his” river, which was just out his front door. He also cherished and enjoyed his many river friends.

Bill was also an avid music lover, and he could often be spotted at various music venues in Harrisburg, York, and Lancaster, where he enjoyed the live music scene. He was also a passionate WXPN “Street Team” volunteer, always promoting new live music. He had just as many music friends as he did river friends.

Bill was a member of the Wormleysburg River Front Committee; he was also a past Wormleysburg Borough Councilman, and he was the former Chairman of the Wormleysburg Borough Planning Commission. He currently served on the Wormleysburg Zoning Hearing Board; he was a life member, and past president, of the former Wormleysburg Fire Company, where he was instrumental in helping to form the Susquehanna River School. Bill was also a member of the Blues Society of Central Pennsylvania, the Susquehanna Folk Society and the Gateway Historical Society.

Bill also enjoyed researching and sharing the local history of the Susquehanna River and his hometown of Wormleysburg.

Bill was devoted to his loving family, his children and his grandchildren. He was so proud of his kids and their kids! All anyone had to do was ask about them, and they would be shown more pictures than they could ever imagine.

Bill is survived by his wife, Ethel; his two children, Daniel Weigle (Ann), of Atlanta, GA, and Suzanne Colombari (Mike), of Pittsburgh; and his five grandchildren, Allison Weigle, Camden Weigle, Alec Colombari, Ethan Weigle, and William “Will” Weigle.

In the future, there will be a “Gathering of Friends,” where Bill’s family can meet and reminisce with his friends, enjoy a meal, and be serenaded by Bill’s favorite music. Please continue to monitor this page, as Bill’s service information will be updated when the gathering has been scheduled. To leave messages of condolence, please refer to Bill's Tribute Wall.
