Alton "Al" Hughes

January 8, 1943 — December 3, 2025

Camp Hill, PA

Alton Edmund “Al” Hughes, Jr., 82, of Camp Hill, PA, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, December 3, 2025. Born on January 8, 1943, in Salisbury, MD, he was the son of the late Alton E. and Ann Marie (Kauffman) Hughes.

A graduate of Mercersburg Academy, Al went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard and continued his service for many years as a Reservist.

Al began his career as a salesman in the manufactured housing industry before taking a leap of faith into what would become his life’s work. He founded his own company as a builder and developer, and he played a major role in countless land development projects throughout the region. He would own and operate several businesses over the years, including his most recent venture, Wyndham Homes.

He was a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church, Camp Hill, and he was a dedicated member and past president of the Pennsylvania Homebuilders Association. Al was also an avid sporting clay shooter, belonging to many of the local sportsmen’s clubs. In both his work and his hobbies, he had a natural ability for connecting with people—always managing to find the right person for the right job. Yet of all the people he mentored and worked beside, no one meant more to him professionally than his two sons. Watching them succeed and build businesses of their own brought him tremendous pride.

Al approached life with an unwavering optimism. He was steady, upbeat, and genuinely joyful—a man who seemed to wake up every day in a good mood. He was a devoted husband, a wonderful role model for his sons, and an exceptional provider for his family. But his greatest achievement, by far, was becoming a beloved “Pop Pop” to his three grandchildren, and he loved nothing more than cheering them on in everything they did.

Though he will be missed tremendously, his family and friends feel incredibly fortunate to have had such a positive and wholesome influence in their lives.

Surviving Al is his best friend and wife of 50 years, Patricia (Gessner) Hughes; his two sons, Jason A. Hughes (wife, Emily) of Etters, and Michael P. Hughes (wife, Jess) of Lewisberry; a grandson, Phoenix; and two granddaughters, Rorie and Towsyn.

Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution in Al’s name to Grace Lutheran Church, 1610 Carlisle Road, Camp Hill, PA 17011.
