Charles A. Hamburg

January 2, 1931 — August 17, 2025

Frederick, MD

Charles Allen Hamburg, 94, of Frederick, MD, and originally of New Cumberland, PA, passed away on Sunday, August 17, 2025, with his daughters by his side. He was born on January 2, 1931, in New Cumberland, to the late Beulah V. (Hartman) Hamburg and Joseph F. Hamburg, Sr.

A 1948 graduate of the former New Cumberland High School, Charlie would spend two summers serving in the National Guard before marrying the love of his life, Marian, and starting a career. He worked for International Harvester dealerships in Central PA, Detroit Michigan, Columbus Ohio, Chicago Illinois before relocating to Frederick Maryland in 1972, where he became manager of H.B. Duvall, Inc. (now, Western Maryland Outdoor Power, Inc.) for more than 20 years.

Known for his woodworking skills, Charlie was a gifted craftsman, earning a handful of prizes throughout the years for his handmade furniture. Beyond his workshop, he enjoyed tackling all sorts of home improvement projects, and he faithfully read the newspaper. He found peace fishing with friends, expressing himself through abstract painting and relaxing to the sounds of jazz music.

Family was paramount for Charlie. He and Marian would often pack up the family and visit relatives in New Cumberland, where the couple had grown up just blocks apart. They also took many family trips to the museums in DC. As parents, Charlie and Marian encouraged their children to pursue their passions, whether that be art, music or theater. Before moving to Maryland, they would attend Trinity United Methodist Church, New Cumberland, as a family.

Known for his humor and charm, he loved handing out candy, teasing and joking, and was always quick to laugh. Even in later years, he was known to push aside his rollator and dance in the aisles when the retirement home hosted live concerts.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the care team at Edenton Retirement Community for the genuine, compassionate care they provided to Charlie over the past 14 years.

Surviving Charlie are his daughters, Elizabeth A. Tipton of Old Hickory, TN, Amy J. Hamburg-Mead (Andrew Mead) of Bloomington, IN, and Erika L. Hamburg-Brown (Lenn Brown) of Newnan, GA; grandchildren, Charlie Mead (Alyssa) and Sam Mead (Mary), Andrew Mead (Eric) and Dory Mead, and Kaitlenn Brown and Noah Brown; and three great-grandchildren, Dottie, Stephen and Cecilia. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Marian E. (Miller) Hamburg; and three brothers, Joe, Ross and Donald Hamburg.

A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, New Cumberland, where he’ll be interred alongside his wife.
