Darrell Lynn Lucas

Darrell Lynn Lucas, 73, of Fairview Twp., New Cumberland, passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2023 in UPMC Harrisburg Hospital.

He was a retired materials handler with DDSP Susquehanna, PA serving New Cumberland, Mechanicsburg and Letterkenny federal facilities.  Darrell was a U.S. Navy veteran, was a graduate of Mechanicsburg Area Senior High School and was a member of Calvary Chapel Harrisburg / West Shore.

Darrell was born in Mechanicsburg, PA, the son of the late James Sr. and Pauline (Miller).  In addition to his parents, he was the widower of Anna Mae (Schindler) Lucas to whom he was married to for more than 45 years, and was preceded in death by three brothers, Ed, Foster and James, Jr. and two sisters, Shirley Stetler and Karen Keller.

He is survived by his three sons, Gregory and wife Mary Ann of Camp Hill, Derek of Clearwater, FL and Jason and wife Beckie of Camp Hill; his sister Joyce Shaefer of Mechanicsburg; seven grandchildren, Kelsey (Joe), Jamin (fiancé Jacey), Joki, Kamden, Peyton, Keller and Caleb; great grandchildren, William, Benji, Naomi, Greyson and Ashton; and many nieces and nephews.

Darrell was always at his wife’s side, whether it be moral support, chauffeuring, “muscle” or whatever was needed to help “Nonie” run her errands of mercy helping other people. Darrell’s love for Anna ran deep, and at any function where there was music, Darrell and Anna would be seen slow dancing. Family was very important to Darrell. He would help his sister Joyce by running errands for her and bringing her pickled eggs and mashed potatoes. He attended many sports and non-sports events in which his grandchildren participated. Not only in Pennsylvania but flying to Florida so he could be there to support all his grandchildren. Darrell coached little league baseball for all three of his sons and his grandchildren.  He loved Jesus, followed the word of God, and was baptized in 2018 to confirm his belief. He would regularly tell people “God is great” or ask “You know Jesus loves you, right?”.

Darrell was in charge of the mashed potatoes for every family gathering, and most of the time you could find him doing all of this with a Pepsi and his black cup, and when the situation permitted, – in his chair. Darrell was a diligent gardener in his flower beds and enjoyed all things sports. He was an avid Hershey Bears (season ticket holder with his wife “Nonie”), Chicago Blackhawks, Los Angeles Dodgers, USC, and Indianapolis Colts fan.  On top of this, he never missed a PA State wrestling championship in Hershey.  He enjoyed Classic Rock and attending concerts. He loved to tell stories of all the bands he had seen back in the day.

The family would like to thank the staff at UPMC Harrisburg CTICU for their above and beyond care.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, April 29, 2023 in Calvary Chapel Harrisburg / West Shore, 702 Lisburn Rd. Camp Hill, PA with Pastor Matt VanderVen officiating.  Visitation with the family will be held at 10 am prior to service time in the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions in Darrell’s memory to the Autism Society of Greater Harrisburg, P.O. Box 101, Enola, PA 17025.
