God called Doris home on Sunday, April 1, 2024 to be with loved ones who went home earlier, and will be reunited with her beautiful mother, Ruth, her beloved son, Jeffrey, and the love of her life, Merle. The family of 11 children of her grandparents, William and Elizabeth Engle, will have one of their famous “family reunions” when Doris arrives.
She attended Riverside Elementary, Camp Curtin Junior High and William Penn Senior High Schools, graduating in the Class of 1951. Doris retired from the PA Department of Revenue as a Research Analyst in 1998. Prior to employment at Revenue, she attended Penn State University where she accomplished a course in Fleet Safety Management and was a certified Safety Director in the trucking industry.
Doris began traveling after her children became adults and moved from home. She visited 8 European countries, Australia, Panama, Alaska and many of the United States. She particularly loved Las Vegas and playing slot machines. Other hobbies included bowling, golf, writing and editing. At an earlier age, she drove stock cars at a nearby, now defunct, speedway.
She was honored by Governor Dick Thornburgh as an outstanding employee. The Governor praised her work ethic and noted that in one instance she had saved the Commonwealth millions of dollars in tax revenues while employed by the Department of Revenue.
One of her capabilities was in organizing. After retiring, she organized “The Riverside Gang” in 1999, and a reunion is still being held every year. Family reunions, class luncheons, meetings of former St. Paul’s Lutheran Church members, and was a committee person for the William Penn Senior High School reunions for 50 years. Another great interest involved politics, and her devotion to responsible government is known to all who knew her.
Doris was predeceased by her beautiful and loving mother, Ruth E. Engle, and the love of her life, Merle C. Etter. Sadly, she lost her beloved son, Jeffrey Allan Conway, and never completely got through the grieving process since his passing.
Survivors include her daughters, Rhonda S. Ross (Brad) and Michelle R. Musser; daughter-in-law, Jane Conway; and grandchildren, Eric J. Weaver, Chad M. Seachrist, Jill D. Conway Kirwan (Jason), and Jeffrey A. Conway Jr. (Abigail). Also surviving are six great-grandchildren, Travers, Liam, Abigail and Margo Kirwan, and Joshua and Emma Conway.
A public visitation will be held from 10:30AM until a funeral service begins at 11AM on Friday, April 5, 2024 at Parthemore Funeral Home & Cremation Services, New Cumberland. Burial will immediately follow in Rolling Green Cemetery, Camp Hill.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution in Doris’s name to either the American Heart Association (www.heart.org) or to the Cancer Research Foundation (www.cancerresearchfdn.org).
