Edward W. Hurst, 85, of New Cumberland, Fairview Twp., passed away peacefully Friday, September 12, 2025, at Arden Courts of Susquehanna, Harrisburg.
A 1958 graduate of Pottsville High School, he was a retired Switching Equipment Technician from Verizon Telephone Company, Harrisburg. A sailor in the United States Navy, Edward served as a Radioman on the USS Jonas Ingram during the early 1960s. While part of a goodwill mission to the Horn of Africa, Edward brought American virtue to local inhabitants that never before experienced Western culture. He loved his family, his friends, his dogs, and fishing. He was a member of the Susquehannock Club, near Lyman Run, Potter County. Edward was a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church, Camp Hill.
He was born August 15, 1940, in Pottsville to the late Walter Christian and Doris Genevieve (Michael) Hurst. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Lois A. Lowthert, Marian R. Miller, and Jean D. Dilcher.
He is survived by his wife, Gayle Dorothea (Zimmerman) Hurst; sons, Edward C. Hurst (Lauren Rogers) of Mechanicsburg and David A. Hurst (Rachel Warrick) of New Cumberland; brother, Kenneth Hurst of Tow, TX; step grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Inurnment services with military honors will be held at 2:30pm Monday, September 22nd at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Hanover Twp.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested to be sent to your local chapter of the SPCA.
