Elwood S. "Woody" Barr, 91, of New Cumberland, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, November 3, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on Christmas Day, 1933, in Harrisburg, he was the son of the late Elwood S. Barr, Sr. and Mary (Grandone) Barr.
A proud graduate of John Harris High School ('51), Woody dedicated 38 years of his career to the former AMP, Inc., where he retired as a skilled tool and die maker. He also served his country with pride for nearly a decade in the Pennsylvania National Guard.
Woody and his wife, Caroline, were devoted members of St. Theresa Catholic Church in New Cumberland. Together, they shared many passions-dancing with the Capital City Polka Dancers, camping with the Central PA Unit WBCCI Club, and traveling across the country in their camper. Over the years, they visited nearly every corner of the U.S. and enjoyed spending 22 winters in Florida. Nothing brought them more joy than seeing their love for camping carried on by their children and grandchildren.
Woody had a beautiful singing voice and shared his talent with both the Keystone Capital Chorus and St. Theresa's Choir (which he also directed for a period of time). A man of humor and warmth, he was an avid reader—especially fond of learning about World War II and American history. A gifted self-taught artist, over the years, Woody produced a variety of pen and ink sketches and cartoons for family and organizations to which he belonged. Later in life, he found enjoyment in intricate counted cross stitch work. But his love and passion were working in oils and acrylics. Even after his strokes, Woody continued painting, sharing his artwork with family and friends. Just recently, Woody donated several of his pieces of artwork to the New Cumberland Library to help with their fundraising efforts. Above all, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose gentle spirit and kind heart left an impression on everyone he met. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Surviving Woody is his wife and best friend of 71 years, Caroline (Mikos) Barr; his children, Anthony P. Barr (Debra) of New Cumberland and Marie B. Conner (Victor) of New Cumberland; grandchildren, Michael Schubert (Amy), Karl Schubert (Elizabeth), and Joshua Barr (Jackie); and four great-grandchildren, Brooklyn, Luca, Micah, and Tessa. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jaime Barr; and a sister and brother, Mary Woods and Donald Barr.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10AM on Monday, November 10, 2025, at St. Theresa Catholic Church, New Cumberland. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Mechanicsburg. After interment, friends and family are invited to return to the church's social hall for a luncheon.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to St. Theresa Catholic Church or to the Central PA Food Bank.
