New Cumberland

George Richard McClure, 94, of New Cumberland, was welcomed into the kingdom of heaven on Saturday, July 18, 2026 at his home. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Born in New Cumberland to the late George Elex McClure and Evelyn McClure, George was preceded in death by Ardith, his beloved wife of 67 years.

Whether you knew him as George or Dick, he lived a long life full of purpose, service, and dedication to his family and community. He was a proud 1949 alumnus of the former New Cumberland High School, where he excelled at football and basketball. A Korean War Era Army veteran, he later graduated from Franklin and Marshall College and worked for the United States General Accounting Office for 30 years.

George was a man of strong faith, who was known for his sense of humor and tireless commitment to helping people. He routinely provided home repairs and tax preparation services for many local families in need. A longstanding member of Trinity Church of New Cumberland, he also previously served as the Financial Secretary at the New Cumberland First Church of God and Grace United Methodist Church in Harrisburg.

He was an avid sports fan who loved watching and talking about games with three generations of family members. An outdoor enthusiast in his younger days, George particularly enjoyed hunting, hiking, and fishing on the Delaware Bay. He also spent many vacations with his family on the beaches of New Jersey, Delaware, and the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

George also possessed a strong interest in local history. He collected arrowheads, and was an expert on the Civil War, particularly the Battle of Gettysburg where one of his ancestors fought for a Pennsylvania regiment.

But above all, George treasured spending quality time with his family and always encouraged them to pursue their dreams. He is survived by his children Rick McClure (Connie) of Etters, Cynthia Gardner (Steve) of Camp Hill, Kevin McClure (Christine) of Glenmoore, PA, and Jennifer McClure of Mechanicsburg; six grandchildren, George McClure III (Teri), Kyle McClure (Beth), Tyler Gardner (Emily), Matthew McClure, Mark McClure, and Kaitlyn McClure; four great grandchildren, Brody and Carly McClure, and Brooks and Nora Gardner; and three step great grandchildren, Lily, Blake, and Abby Schultz.

In keeping with George’s wishes, services will be held privately at the family's convenience.

In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to Trinity Church of New Cumberland.
