Sadly, our loving mother and grandmother, Janet Mary (Last) Shank, of Bethany Village, Mechanicsburg, and a former 61-year resident of New Cumberland, died on June 30, 2026. Janet was born on September 2, 1930, to the late William and Grace (Harley) Last. In 1945, Janet and her parents moved from Collingswood, NJ, to Lemoyne, PA. In 1948, she graduated from Lemoyne High School where she played basketball and was in the band and color guard. She attended Penn State University for two years. On June 27, 1952, Janet and Sy Shank were married and began 59 happy years together until his death in August, 2011.
Janet’s career started as secretary to Edward First (new member of the law firm Daniels and Swope) before spending time at the Plumbing Contracts Association. With the birth of her children, Mike and Sue, she quit work until after their high school graduation. At that time, she began 19 years of part-time employment at CCNB, Dauphin Deposit and PNC Banks, retiring in 2003.
Janet always looked forward to celebrating special family events and playing games. For many years, she and Sy enjoyed vacationing at the Jersey Shore, going on Sy's well-planned trips throughout the United States and Canada, playing bridge, and spending time with family and friends, with many happy memories created along the way.
Janet is survived by her son and daughter, Michael Shank (Katherine) and Suzan (Shank) Kissinger (Michael); grandchildren, Benjamin Shank, Samantha (Shank) Dilts, Daniel Shank, and Jeffrey Kissinger; as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was a member of Lemoyne Senior Citizens and St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in New Cumberland.
Janet would like to thank her daughter, Suzan, for her loving care and consideration. She would like to thank Geneva Monyoukaye for her wonderful care and compassionate help during this final chapter of life. She would, also, like to thank her son, Michael, for his help with her and Sy over the years.
Her advice to family and friends: never lose your sense of humor, and spend time with the people you love and care about.
A public visitation will be held from 6-8PM on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at Parthemore Funeral Home & Cremation Services, New Cumberland. At 10AM the following morning, Wednesday, July 22, mass will be held at St. Theresa Catholic Church, New Cumberland, followed by committal in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Mechanicsburg.
