John Peter Horan

November 23, 1940 — October 6, 2025

John (Jack) Peter Horan, 84, formerly of Barnesville, passed away on October 6, 2025. He was born on November 23, 1940, in Mahanoy City, PA, to the late John and Aseneth (Hudson) Horan.

Jack shared a beautiful marriage of 63 years with his wife, Martha (Mocknick) Horan, whom he married on September 1, 1962. Together, they raised two children, David (RoseAnne) Horan and Karen (Jeff Taylor) Pyryt, who continue to honor his legacy. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren: Thomas Pyryt, Patrick Horan, Sarah Donnelly, and Jordan Horan, as well as his brother, Thomas Horan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Bettsy Hadesty.

Jack’s life was one of unwavering dedication. One of his proudest achievements may have been building his own home, serving as general contractor, with the same focus and determination that marked his career of 33 years as a culinary instructor at the local vocational school. Jack’s love for cooking started at the Mansion Hotel in Mahanoy City and Leiby’s Restaurant in South Tamaqua. With a master’s degree from Temple University, he shared his passion for the culinary arts with countless aspiring chefs over the years. Jack was known for his incredible baking skills, particularly his delightful pies.

Beyond the kitchen, Jack was deeply passionate about shooting and the outdoors. An avid local hunter and fisherman, he also enjoyed adventures out west and to Canada. His knowledge and love for outdoor sports were reflected in his memberships with various sportsmen’s clubs and the NRA.

Jack’s legacy lives on through his character, firm yet tender, with a heart that made room for those he cared for. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no services at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jack's honor may be made to Gentiva Hospice of Camp Hill, the organization that provided him with compassionate care during his final days.
