Joyce E. (Shearer) Hoover, 83, formerly of New Cumberland, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 22, 2022 from complications of Parkinson’s Disease. She was born in West Fairview, Cumberland County, the daughter of the late Robert and Catherine (Spong) Shearer and was the widow of Jay E. Hoover, Sr.
Joyce grew up on the West Shore and graduated from West Shore High School in Lemoyne. She married Jay Hoover in 1957 and they raised three children — Denise, Jay & Jill — on Second Street in New Cumberland. Joyce worked part time as a lunch lady at the New Cumberland Middle School cafeteria, though later in life "cook" became a four-letter word to her. Joyce had many hobbies that kept her quite busy throughout her life — crocheting, walking in volksmarches and traveling across the country. An avid traveler by car, Joyce and her husband visited every state except Hawaii and Alaska and truly loved seeing all of America. Joyce was also devoted to her 6 grandchildren — Jordan, Jeremiah, Sara, Carrie, Danielle & Stefanie — and did everything she could to support them & bring them joy — that is, until they got on her last nerve. Joyce was also lucky enough to meet and cuddle her two great grandsons, Charles & Harvey, in person this year. After her husband's passing in 2016, Joyce moved to several different independent living facilities, making good friends at each place she lived. If you could accept her no nonsense exterior, Joyce would be fiercely loyal, thoughtful, funny as hell and would give you shit — though she always expected to get it right back. Joyce will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
Joyce is survived by her children, Denise Schaffer and husband Steve of Elysburg, PA, Jay E. Hoover, Jr. and wife Marilyn of Atlanta, GA and Jill Fuchs and husband Steve of Etters, PA; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In keeping with Joyce’s wishes, services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions be made in Joyce’s memory to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, P.O. Box 5014 Hagerstown, MD 21741-5014 or https://www.michaeljfox.org/ to continue the fight against Parkinson’s Disease.
