Marjorie L. House

Marjorie House, 92 years of age, of Bethany Village Retirement Community in Mechanicsburg, died Monday, September 21, 2026, at West Shore Hospital in Mechanicsburg, Pa.

A long-time lay member of the Susquehanna United Methodist Conference, she earned a bachelor’s degree in sacred music from Drew University, a United Methodist-related college in Madison, N.J. She served the conference for many years in different capacities with United Methodist Women, as a Lab School teacher, a volunteer with Mission Central, and as a lay member to annual conference.

She was born and raised in Williamstown, Massachusetts, on October 2, 1933, to Edward and Evelyn Lamphier. Marjorie met Jay Wesley House at Drew University while he was studying for his divinity degree to become a Methodist pastor. They were married soon after Marjorie graduated. She stayed at home for the first couple of decades of their marriage to care for their four children, the first born in 1957 and last in 1967.

Marjorie was an excellent musician, playing piano, organ, auto harp, and other stringed instruments. She and her brother learned piano from their mother, who studied music at Skidmore College. After her youngest child entered high school, she began working outside the home and eventually found her calling to serve as office administrator with the Boys and Girls Club of Harrisburg, retiring in 1999. She was an avid reader and managed several book club memberships simultaneously.

She was preceded in death by her son, Daryl Wesley House (1980), and her husband, the Rev. Dr. Jay Wesley House (2023). She is survived by her daughter, Christie R. House (Donald Reasoner) of Harrisburg; sons, the Rev. James C. House (Angela) of Huntingdon, Pa.; and Scott E. House of Seattle, Wa.; and granddaughters, Kimberlin, Rebekah, Jezika (Richard) and Hannah.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until a memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 7, 2026, at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, 500 Simpson Ferry Road, Mechanicsburg. Private interment will be in Wildwood Cemetery in Williamsport, Pa.
