Mechanicsburg

Wayne A. “Champ” Howell, born July 1, 1934, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, passed away leaving behind a legacy of dedication to family, education, athletics, and community.

The son of Sadie and Fulton Howell, Wayne graduated in 1952 from William Penn High School. He went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education from East Stroudsburg University in 1963 and later pursued additional graduate studies, remaining a lifelong advocate for education and personal growth.

Wayne devoted 33 years to the West Shore School District as a Health and Physical Education teacher, shaping generations of students with his steady leadership and passion for fitness. He also served as a coach at Cedar Cliff High School, including football, golf, and softball. Beyond the classroom, Wayne worked with the YMCA and remained deeply involved in community athletics throughout his life.

Known as “Champ” for good reason. A Golden Gloves boxer in his early adult life, he was a master of many sports. The family often joked that if a ball was involved in a game, Wayne could play it. That said, he was best known as a fierce handball and golf competitor. He won numerous local and state handball championships and was widely respected for his competitive spirit and dedication to the sport. His many athletic achievements led to induction into the Pennsylvania Hall of Fame (West Shore Chapter) and recognition from East Stroudsburg University for outstanding athletic accomplishment.

In addition to being a longtime member of PSERS, the Penn State Nittany Lion Club, and several community organizations, Wayne took great joy in spending time with his family, friends, and staying active. An animal lover, he owned several boxer dogs throughout his lifetime who brought him great joy and many lasting friendships with fellow animal lovers.

He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Janet; his children, Kimberly Langdon (Tony) of Aubrey, TX; Pamela Schneider (Keith) of Camp Hill, PA; and Douglas Howell (Meredith) of Mechanicsburg, PA; seven grandchildren, Brian (Dea) Schneider of Mechanicsburg, PA; Marissa (Dylan) Rhodes of Chambersburg, PA; Nicole (Ty) Reed of Aubrey, TX; Morgan (Scott) Wright of Mechanicsburg, PA; Lauren (Mike) Kelly of Aviano, Italy; and Meg Cox of Irving, TX; and five great-grandchildren, Kali, Isla, Niko, Levi, and Elle.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the local ASPCA or the North American Animal League.

Wayne will be remembered for his steady presence, love of a good joke, competitive spirit, and deep love for his family — a man who showed up every day, led by example, and left the world better than he found it.
