William F. “Bill” Gil, 55, of Lewisberry, PA, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, December 21, 2025, at home. He was born on June 13, 1970, in Nutley, NJ, and would go on pursue a career centered around helping and interacting with those around him.
Bill graduated from Seton Hall Prep in 1988 and went on to attend the University of Scranton, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 1992 and a Master of Science in Community Counseling in 1994. After several early career positions, he found his professional footing at Live! Casino & Hotel Maryland, working in a promotional role on the casino floor. A subsequent opportunity brought him to Central Pennsylvania, where he joined the staff at SCI Camp Hill. There, Bill put his education and compassion to meaningful use, counseling inmates and providing support in a variety of capacities. For the past five years, he worked in a security role at Walmart in Etters, a position he truly enjoyed. He valued his coworkers and the daily interactions with the public—an environment that allowed his naturally congenial personality to shine.
Bill had a lifelong interest in politics and, in the early 1990s, attended both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions. He was a lifelong New York Jets fan, a science fiction enthusiast, with The Lord of the Rings and Star Trek among his favorites, and he listened to his favorite bands, like Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and Ozzy. He loved Peanuts cartoons and especially looked forward to watching their TV specials around the holidays. Bill was “that guy” who wore comical t-shirts with slogans and funny quips—you could always count on him for a laugh.
He was a man of faith, attending St. Theresa Catholic Church in New Cumberland and always doing what he could to support his family. He was a wonderful support system for his mother and son—they were his entire world. Bill was his mother’s constant companion, serving as her chauffeur and grocery-shopping assistant, and he watched over her closely after the passing of his father. Weekends were typically spent with Tristan, whom Bill affectionately called “T” or “T-Man,” whether they were exploring new places or simply talking and having a drink at a local bar. Bill shared his love of travel with his family, taking his parents and son to Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas, later returning there with just Tristan. Together, they also traveled to New Orleans and Aruba and visited several major theme parks.
Above all else, Bill had a big heart and was generous with his time and care. He was a source of support for anyone in need, and he genuinely loved people. Personal connection brought him his greatest joy, and his warmth and kindness will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Surviving Bill is his son, Tristan R. Gil of Mechanicsburg; his mother, Barbara Ann Murphy of Lewisberry; aunts, Virginia Thompson and Regina Wolfe; uncle, William Thompson; his former wife, Karen (Gil) Ross; and a large extended family. He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Herbert “Herb” Murphy; an uncle, Dennis Thompson; and grandparents, William and Genevieve Thompson.
